Thetford Mines is the main city of the MRC des Appalaches and the largest urban agglomeration in the region, comprising both urban zones and agricultural areas. The city is a business hub in which industry and the environment coexist in harmony. Nestled in a valley at the foot of the Appalachians, the municipality of Thetford Mines was founded in 1876 when chrysotile ore was discovered. The valley therefore features a unique landscape that is most remarkable because of the sharp contrast between the huge mining waste heaps and the abundant vegetation. It also boasts a high-quality, fully paved bike path. Located midway between Québec City and Sherbrooke, at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, Thetford Mines is a leading regional centre in the Chaudière-Appalaches region.
